When compassion feels impossible
Have you ever found yourself knowing the “right” response, but feeling completely unable to give it?
You know Jesus calls you to show compassion, patience, or grace, but your heart feels tired, hurt, frustrated, or empty. In those moments, compassion can feel less like a gentle invitation and more like an impossible task.
Jesus says in Luke 6:36,
“You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate”.
Luke 6:36 (NLT)
Those words are beautiful, but they can also feel deeply challenging when someone has wounded you or pushed your patience to the limit.
The good news is that God never asks you to walk the path of peacemaking in your own strength.
Philippians 2:13 reminds us,
“For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him”.
Philippians 2:13 (NLT)
Notice that God doesn’t only give us the power to obey him, he also reshapes our hearts along the way. Even the desire to respond differently is something his Spirit grows within us.
That means compassion does not begin with pretending you are fine or forcing yourself to feel something you don’t. Often, it begins with bringing your honest struggle to Jesus. “Lord, I don’t have much grace left right now. Please help me respond in a way that honours you.”
As we stay close to Christ, he slowly softens hard places in us. He helps us pause before reacting, listen before judging, and extend mercy we could never produce on our own.
The next time compassion feels out of reach, perhaps your first peacemaking step is simply an honest prayer: “Lord, help me respond the way you would.”
