Finding peace when conflict feels overwhelming
Conflict really is everywhere – on our newsfeeds, in politics, around the dinner table, even in our own hearts. It’s part of being human. But it doesn’t mean we’re stuck in it forever.
God offers us another way. A way that brings freedom, healing, and peace.
Wisdom for the messy moments
Years ago, I sensed God nudging me to dig into Proverbs. Over 18 months, I read a chapter a day. Again and again, I was struck by the contrast between wisdom and folly. It wasn’t about being “right” or “wrong” all the time – it was about learning to walk in balance, with humility and grace.
It reminded me how often we see life through a black-and-white lens – judging what’s fair or unfair, good or bad. But God invites us to pause, reflect, and look deeper. Especially when conflict flares up.
What’s going on in your heart?
When you feel tension rising, it’s usually connected to something you care deeply about. That’s not wrong – passion can be a good thing. But it’s still important to check in with God. The Psalmist puts it beautifully:
“Search me, God, and know my heart… See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”Psalm 139:23-24
In the Everyday Peacemaking and Heart of Peacemaking courses, we dig deep into the role of the heart, and explore how even good desires can quietly slip into demands. And when that happens, we start judging and punishing others – whether out loud or just in our minds. That’s when conflict grows, and relationships start to fray.
Living as a peacemaker
Jesus said,
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Matthew 5:9
It’s a beautiful promise – and also a calling.
As God’s children, we are invited to live that out by the way we respond to conflict. That doesn’t mean avoiding hard conversations. It means choosing a different posture: one that seeks to glorify God, serve others, and become more like Jesus.
These are what we call the Three Opportunities in Conflict.
When we choose to glorify God, serve others, and be like Jesus – especially in moments of tension – His Spirit becomes visible in us. And people do notice. It’s often in conflict that our faith speaks the loudest.
So, how’s your heart today? Is there a situation where God might be inviting you to take a first step towards peace?
“As far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone”.Romans 12:18
